To Form a Nation:
A Vexillological Examination

To Form a Nation was a project completed in response to the attitude towards and treatment of Mexican immigrants in Trump’s America. My family is made up of immigrants and to see the suffering and tearing apart of families at the border has been very difficult. I became interested in the idea of Nationalism and Nationhood, and what it means to engage with an inherently colonialist structure. This 300 page book is an examination of national flags, from color symbolism to pattern examination.

In it, I treat the flags with reverence, as almost sacred objects, alluding to the language used by Nationalists when discussing their country.
